Our aim is for children to be able to communicate their ideas, knowledge, thoughts, and emotions to others through writing. We plan writing opportunities in all areas of the curriculum so that children can experience writing for purpose and context and developing an awareness of audience. Speaking and listening and drama activities are used to stimulate, rehearse, and plan writing, developing composition and extending vocabulary. We aim to equip children with the skills and knowledge to be confident and competent writers.
Children are encouraged to believe that good writers edit and organise their work effectively, both during and after the writing process. Grammar and punctuation may be taught within the English lesson with the aim of teaching the required punctuation and grammar skills linked to the writing genre or as stand-alone lessons. We aim for children to leave school with good, joined, and speedy handwriting and take pride in their presentation.
We aim for children to understand how widely and useful writing skills are in life and to see themselves as writers.
